LinkedIn isn’t just about trying to find a job. It can also help you to create an online presence that gets noticed by admissions officers. How can you use LinkedIn properly so that you can put social media to work for your education journey?
Here are a few tips:
- Keep the profile picture professional – When someone sees your face, they want to be able to easily confirm that they have found the person they are looking for. So make it a headshot (not the full body) and keep the background neutral so your face stands out.
- Put the right things in the experience section – While it is true that you may not have a lot of work experience before college, there are still a lot of things you can include as experience. For example, be sure to note any volunteer work you have done, the languages you speak, certificates you have acquired, hobbies you have a particular proficiency with, and things like that.
- Make the summary count – This is the first thing an admissions officer will see, so be sure it is attention-getting (but not in a “hype” sort of way – filled with buzzwords and no substance). Mention what you are looking for out of your education journey and future career, and use keywords linked to your chosen field.
