Don’t let adults fool you. Most of us still don’t know what we want to be when we grow up. But the reason you get asked that question so much as a kid is because you basically have to decide by the time you go to college. After all, it can be tough to choose a school with a good program if you don’t know what you want to study. Here are a few tips for narrowing down the options.
- Think about what you love to do – Let’s be honest – not everyone gets to do what they love for work. However, there is nothing wrong with adding what you love to the list.
- Consider the requirements – What classes are involved in studying the fields you are interested in? Are there topics that you worry about struggling with? How many years will the degree take?
- Think about career possibilities – Will you be able to make enough money to pay back student loans in your chosen career? Some students choose a topic that they love but spend so much on education that even the best career in that field will leave them in debt for decades.
You have to balance what you love to do with what is in demand (and likely to stay in demand between now and when you will graduate). Otherwise, you could end up spending a fortune studying a major that you never actually use at work.
