Just choosing a college major can be a difficult and even stressful part of the planning process. Here are a few tips to help set your mind at ease while also assisting you in making the best decision possible.
- Think about the schools you are applying to – Consider the program in your chosen major at the schools you are applying to. If they don’t have the program you are looking for, or if it is not up to par, then you may need to change either your major or update your list of schools.
- Talk with an industry professional – Rather than taking career advice from friends or family members who have never worked in that industry, see if you can find someone in your chosen field who is willing to discuss what it is like. What you learn may confirm that this is the path for you or convince you to look for something else.
- Weigh potential salaries versus loan amounts – Find out what the entry salary is for a person in your chosen field of study. Will that allow you to pay back your student loans? Weigh potential salaries against the likely cost of varying degrees.
- Remember, it’s not written in stone – While you don’t want to get stuck paying for a bunch of credits you can’t use, remember that switching majors is common and not the end of the world. Choosing your major before attending college doesn’t automatically determine the rest of your school or work career.
