College visits can help you get a good grasp on the experience at a university so you know which is your favorite and what to expect. Here are a few quick tips to help you get the most from your college visits.

  • Select the right schools – You won’t be able to visit every college you intend to apply to in person, so be sure to choose a good mix of schools.
  • Begin planning now – Spring of your junior year in high school is the ideal time for college visits, so you should begin the planning process at least a year ahead of time.
  • Manage your expectations – College tours move quickly. You need to be prepared with the right mindset and questions to get the most out of it.
  • Set a budget – Again, you can’t go to every school. Your budget may even dictate which schools you visit since some may be too far away to travel to for a visit. But if your budget allows, be sure to at least visit your favorite school or two, besides some closer options.
  • Check out nearby campuses – Even if you don’t plan on going to school close to home, you should at least check out one or two nearby schools. Who knows? They may change your mind!
