Experts suggest that you should apply to anywhere from four to eight colleges. This allows you room to go after a couple of schools that are on your wishlist, albeit unlikely. Make sure that there are at least a couple of sure things on the list (often called fallback schools). The rest should all land somewhere in between – reasonably attainable options where you would be happy to attend.
Now it is time to fill out all of those applications. Here are a few tips to help you tilt the odds in your favor.
- Proofread – Spelling matters from here on out. Whether it is a school application or a memo to your boss, you need to use proper spelling and grammar. You may want to invest in a grammar checker to help if English wasn’t your best subject in high school.
- Focus on the essay – With the SAT and ACT scores now being optional on most applications, the essay is by far the most essential component. Work on your writing skills and prepare to write the most important essays of your life. Remember to read the instructions carefully so that your essay meets the guidelines.
- Don’t forget the application fee – Without the fee, your applications won’t even be read. Fees vary from school to school. In some cases, you may be able to get this fee waived.
