When spots for students at a university are running low, and a lot of the applications in the maybe pile are starting to seem similar, it can be the little details that make a difference. Here are some of the reasons for wanting volunteer work on your student profile.

  • Volunteer work shows your character – Universities are looking for people who get along well with others, display kindness, and are not going to cause any issues on campus. Being a volunteer shows your character, and that can go a long way.
  • Volunteers can’t be lazy – Colleges are also looking for motivated students who are going to work hard. Since volunteer work doesn’t involve pay, it shows you can work hard even when the only reward is being able to feel good about what you accomplished.
  • Volunteering shows your passion – Obviously, you have to be passionate about a cause to devote time to it without pay. If the volunteer work is related to your major, that’s even better because it shows your passion for the topic. But really, any volunteer work lets the admissions officer know that you are driven and that you will prioritize your time to reach your goals.
