Starting a Conversation with Your Kids About College 1

When your kids hit their teen years, they may be less likely to confide in you, depending on how open communication is in the family and the temperament of your child. If you are finding it difficult to have a dialogue with your teen about college, here are a few ways to get the conversation going.

  • Ask about the type of career they are interested in – This is a much less controversial topic than jumping right into discussing a college major. Once you find out what careers interest them, you may be able to help steer them toward the best college major for that job.
  • Focus on the future – Instead of asking about college itself, spring ahead a few years after that. Discuss what your child hopes their life to be like in five or even ten years. Then you can work your way back to college and the role it may play in helping them reach their goals.
  • Jump right into the financials – It may sound crazy, but your child may find it easier to discuss how much college costs than to think about which school they want to go to or what major they will choose. Start by asking how much they are willing to invest in their education and take it from there.
