You’ve spent the better part of the last 18 years having family and friends ask you what you want to be when you grow up. If you’re not one of the lucky few who have been certain of what you want to do with your life since childhood, that can be a stressful question. So, by the time you have to pick a major in college that will set you on a specific career path, it can feel overwhelming.

Here are a few career exploration tips to help you get started on the right foot:

  • What are your natural skills? – Most people find satisfaction in doing things they are good at. If you have some natural talents or skills, you may find fulfillment in pursuing a career in that area.
  • Consider your personal values – Think about the things that are most important to you. Are there careers that can help you promote those values and make the world (or even just your community) a better place? It can also be very fulfilling to make a living doing something you are passionate about.
  • Follow the money – The factor people don’t want to think about is that very often you can’t make enough money to support yourself doing something you love or that you have some natural ability with. So you have to compare your list of careers that fit your wants with job opportunities that can supply your needs.
