Paying for college is difficult enough without getting hit by surprise expenses. So, let’s take a few minutes to discuss some of the expenses associated with a university education that are not covered by tuition.

  • School Supplies – When you were in school as a child, your parents probably paid for things like pens and pencils, notebooks, and other supplies. But now you are an adult and going away to college, and school supplies will be even more pricey. Consider the cost of books, a backpack, a way to take notes (either physical or electronic), and other supplies that are not provided by the school.
  • Campus Fees – Sometimes, there can be fees associated with campus life that are not included in the tuition cost. These may be related to room and board if you stay on campus. However, other fees will be incurred if you don’t live onsite. For example, if you drive to school, there could be parking fees.
  • Expenses if you stay off-campus – If you decide not to live at the university, you will have to think about rent and utilities, meals, transportation costs, and other expenses related to daily life.
  • Additional expenses – These are just costs associated with normal life. Obviously, you are going to have to buy things like shampoo whether you live on campus, rent an apartment, or even if you commute from your parent’s house.
