avoid-mistake-college-essay

There are many good reasons to choose a university. Which ones should you write about when a college application asks you to write a “why us” essay explaining your reasons? That’s just one of the things we will address as we try to help avoid the worst mistakes students make on this type of essay.

  • Mistake 1: Writing about superficial reasons – Yes, it is true that you may love the weather in a certain location, the reputation of a particular school, or even the location of the school. However, these schools know they are conveniently located, have a great reputation, and are known for perfect weather. Instead, try to make a case for why you are a good candidate for the school’s curriculum.
  • Mistake 2: Messing up the name of the school, mascot, or a staff member – When you make this mistake, it shows one of three things, all of which will probably result in a rejection notice. (1) You don’t care enough to get the names right. (2) You didn’t do enough research to get the names right. (3) You were rushing or careless when writing your essay. (It doesn’t matter if those things are true or not.)
  • Mistake 3: Just writing an essay praising their school – Universities don’t need your accolades to think a lot of themselves. What they really are asking is why you are a good fit for their program.
