Visiting Colleges And Discovering a Hidden Gem
By: Karen Rowe
Choosing the right college is a major decision that can shape your future, and visiting campuses is one of the best ways to find the perfect fit. While many students focus on well-known universities, sometimes the best choice is a school you never expected—a hidden gem.
Hidden gem colleges are those that may not have national name recognition but offer excellent programs, dedicated faculty, and strong career opportunities. These schools often have smaller class sizes, personalized attention, and unique opportunities that larger universities might not provide. A college that fits your interests, learning style, and career goals is far more valuable than one with just a prestigious reputation.
On a recent college counselor fly-in program, I discovered Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), a top-tier research institution in Cleveland, Ohio. It’s a true hidden gem. Known for its strong academic programs, innovation, and hands-on learning opportunities, it offers students a balance of rigorous coursework, research experiences, and a supportive campus environment.
The university is particularly well-known for its biomedical engineering and pre-med tracks, making it a great choice for aspiring doctors and researchers. Students can work in world-class facilities like the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, right across the street from the campus, gaining hands-on experience in their fields. The university also has strong connections with industry leaders, helping students secure internships and job placements.
One of CWRU’s biggest strengths is its emphasis on interdisciplinary learning. With highly ranked programs in engineering, medicine, business, and the sciences, students can collaborate across fields to solve real-world problems. I even met students who were engineering majors who didn’t have to sacrifice their love for theater, finding time to star in the latest productions.
Beyond academics, CWRU offers a vibrant student life with over 200 clubs, Division III athletics, and a thriving arts scene. The location in Cleveland provides access to cultural institutions, tech startups, and Fortune 500 companies.
For students looking for a strong academic foundation, research opportunities, and career preparation, Case Western Reserve University is an excellent choice.n
