The process of choosing a major and career path can be a daunting process for high school students. Aptitude tests are one tool that can provide valuable insights into your interests, strengths, and potential career paths. Here’s some advice on how to use these tests effectively:

Understand What Aptitude Tests Can Offer

Aptitude tests measure your strengths, abilities, and skill sets. They can highlight your innate talents and suggest careers that align with your strengths. Keep in mind, though, that these tests are just one piece of the puzzle. They should complement, not replace, personal reflection, research, and experiences.

Research Different Tests

There are several aptitude tests available, each with its own focus:

  • The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) evaluates personality type and can provide insight into work styles and environments that might suit you, although it’s more about personality than aptitude.
  • The Holland Code Assessment uses the acronym RIASEC, which stands for realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising,  and conventional, to describe the main six personality types. After taking the assessment, your personality type is narrowed down to a combination of three.
  • Career Cruising matches interests, abilities and values to occupations, sharing duties and educational paths.

Explore a variety of tests to get a well-rounded view of your potential.

Use Results as a Guide, Not a Directive

The results from these tests can open your eyes to possibilities and confirm inclinations you may already have. However, they should not be used to limit your choices. Your interests, values, and passions are equally important in deciding a career path. Use the results as a starting point for further exploration and discussion.

Seek Additional Resources

Combine the insights from aptitude tests with career counseling, informational interviews, and internships or shadowing opportunities. Talk to professionals in fields you’re interested in and ask about their journey. This real-world information, combined with your test results, can guide you toward a major and career that are a good fit for you.

Reflect on Your Values and Goals

As you consider your options, think about what is most important to you in a career. Is it creativity, impact, stability, work-life balance, or something else? How do your values align with the careers suggested by your aptitude tests?

Be Open to Change

Remember, choosing a major or career path is not a life sentence. It’s quite common to change majors or career paths as you grow and learn more about yourself and the world of work. Stay open to new experiences and be willing to reassess your choices as you gain more knowledge and experience.

In conclusion, aptitude tests can be a valuable tool in your career exploration toolkit. Use them wisely, in conjunction with other resources and personal reflection, to make informed decisions about your future. Remember, the goal is to find a path that not only suits your aptitudes but also aligns with your passions and values.
