College Spotlight: Fordham University
By: Karen Rowe
Visiting colleges around the country is an important part of a college counselor’s job and one I have thoroughly enjoyed throughout my career. It allows me to feel the vibe of a campus and to relay my impressions to those students interested.
Having traveled to New York City recently, I took the opportunity to tour Fordham University. Here are my impressions.
Fordham University:
Location: Fordham University has two distinct campuses, and students can choose which they prefer to reside on. The Rosehill campus is ideal for a student who wants a traditional campus with green space, tree-lined walkways, and easy access to NYC via the D subway line. Shuttle services are plenty on this campus. I even was picked up by a student driver upon arriving at the entrance of campus to bring me to the admissions office. The Rosehill campus houses the majority of students enrolled, close to 9,000. The Lincoln Center Campus is the urban campus nestled between Broadway and Central Park in the city, perfect for a student who wants to be smack in the middle of the action. It houses mostly students pursuing a performing arts major and graduate students.
Targeted Student Audience: A student seeking a medium-sized college with easy access to NYC to engage in internships, job opportunities, the theater, and restaurants, who wants the East Coast weather and the hustle and bustle. Someone who wants a college with school spirit (their basketball team has made it to the NCAA tournament), and someone who wants a Jesuit college experience (they value community service and personal relationships).
Unique Characteristics: Fordham tracks demonstrated interest, which means they want you to visit if it is a top contender, and students should open their emails, as they even measure clicks. Study abroad at their London or Grenada, Spain campuses.
Top Majors: Business, Performing Arts, Humanities
