college-essay-tips

One of the essay types that students dread on college applications is the “why us” topic. However, this is actually a very simple essay to write if you understand the purpose behind it. Really, the school just wants to understand your reasons for selecting their college and how you will fit into their existing university culture.

Here are a few ways to get the essay started:

  • Be enthusiastic – Obviously, the school wants you to be excited about the prospects of heading there for your education. If your essay sounds like you were bored writing it, then the admissions officer is unlikely to be excited about moving the application to the “accept” pile.
  • Do your research – Knowing the school well is a big help. Mention something specific about the university or the curriculum that makes you a good candidate for acceptance. This will prove to them that you put in the time to learn about their facility.
  • Explain why you’re a match – Do you have specific goals, talents, or skills that make you a good fit for the culture of the school or a specific program they offer? Now is your chance to explain why you are a good candidate for them to accept!
