From prevention to recognizing the signs to making a full recovery, we’ve spent the last few weeks discussing student burnout. But what if you’re not the one experiencing the symptoms? If it’s a close friend who is dealing with this issue, you want to do what you can without being too intrusive, so here are a few tips.
- Identify the Signs – If your friend tells you they are experiencing student burnout and asks for your assistance, you are well on your way to helping your buddy recover. But what if they don’t even know they are experiencing the problem? By knowing the indicators of student burnout, you can help your friend figure out what is going on and offer a listening ear.
- Have a Heart to Heart – Once you see what’s happening, you have to have a conversation with your friend that they may not want to hear. Some of the indicators of student burnout aren’t flattering, and most people don’t even want a close friend telling them that they have been more irritable and anxious or less creative and more likely to procrastinate lately.
- Be There – Once the tough talk is over, remember that your friend really just needs to know you are there for them. Provide support the way they want it, whether that means an occasional listening ear or someone to watch a movie or play video games with when they need to turn off “student mode” for a bit.
