How to Add Volunteer Service to Your College Portfolio During a Pandemic 1

We’re being asked to stay indoors for our own sake and that of others. We’re not even supposed to gather with family and friends for the holidays in order to keep down the risk. So how can you add volunteering to your college portfolio? You’re certainly not going to go see strangers when you can’t hug your own grandmother!

Times are difficult, and while we wait to see how things work out, we do want to continue having a volunteer spirit. Happily, there are plenty of ways to do that while still maintaining an appropriate distance. Here are a few tips for college hopefuls who want to do some good for the community and have something nice to add to your college resume.

  • Learn how to make reusable facemasks and donate them
  • Use your social media profile to help animals at a local shelter find a good home
  • Support local businesses by shopping for gift cards and ordering delivery/takeout
  • Reach out to someone you know who is having a hard time dealing with isolation during the health crisis through a handwritten letter, phone call, or video call
  • Donate meals to frontline workers at your local hospital
  • Contact a local nursing home to see if they have a pen pal arrangement, and write to some of the seniors
  • Donate to a local food bank
