Regardless of which school you intend to go to, you are going to need to figure out how much you are going to spend. This will allow you to get the appropriate loans if your savings and financial aid are not enough to cover the entire cost. Here are a few things to consider when trying to calculate the price.

  • Net Price Calculators – Head to the website of the university you are planning to apply to (or have applied to). Each school should have a net price calculator on their website that shows the price you’ll pay after your scholarships, grants, etc. Keep in mind that these calculators are not perfect and that some are better than others.
  • Tuition isn’t the only cost associated with college – You have to factor in room and board as well. If you aren’t staying on campus, you also have to consider transportation costs. Don’t forget incidentals like the price of course books and any other campus fees. Sometimes these things don’t make it into the net price calculation, so you have to leave yourself a little wiggle room.
  • Set something aside for entertainment – Yes, you are going to school to study, but there are going to be times when you just want to see a movie or something like that to mix things up a little and spend time with your new friends.
