Let’s face it, even after we get out of college and head into the workforce, most of us still don’t know “what we want to be when we grow up.” In college, this can cause a major expense, especially if you change your major to something that doesn’t allow many of your credits to transfer. If you already know your passion, you’re one of the lucky ones. Choose a major that matches the field you want to get into, and you’re headed in the right direction. For everyone else, here are a few tips:
- Focus on your talents and abilities – You are more likely to be happy doing something you are good at. If you find you have some natural proficiencies, think about a major that goes along with those talents.
- Think about careers with staying power – What jobs will still be around and thriving decades from now? What fields are growing and seem like they will continue to do so? An education in one of these fields of study may be beneficial for finding a career after school.
- Don’t rush – Take your time. This is an important decision. You should make a list of pros and cons for each possible major and be realistic about the possibilities.
