Has the Pandemic Changed What Admissions Officers Look For 1

The abridged answer to this question has to be, “Yes,” although it requires the addendum, “but not that much.” What is the main difference with what colleges now expect from applications? How can you provide what admissions officers are looking for? Here are a few quick tips.

  • SAT and ACT scores are now generally optional – Most schools no longer required these standardized test scores because, frankly, you may not have been able to find a testing center that was open last spring. On the other hand, if you happen to have scores and they are good, don’t shy away from including them. Optional means that you can leave the score out even if you took the test, so don’t show off an average score.
  • Character has grown in importance – Make sure that your essay shows off your personality, values, and volunteer spirit. Without standardized test scores to go by, admissions officers are making more decisions based on a person’s character. Having never met you, that can only come across in your writing. So if you thought the essay was crucial before, it is even more essential now.
