A key element of your student profile is your online presence. And unless you start an online business or become a social media influencer in high school, the best way to do that is with LinkedIn. While this site is often used by professionals looking for work (or trying to find employees), it is also a unique form of social media that can put a professional spin on your online presence.

Here are a few tips to help you use LinkedIn the right way as a student:

  • A professional profile photo is a must – That doesn’t mean you have to hire a professional to take the photo for you. However, it does mean you should avoid distracting backgrounds, wear professional attire, and avoid the use of AI.
  • Compose the perfect summary – If you don’t have an attention-grabbing summary, the admissions officer may not read further down the page (not to mention potential employers). You don’t want to use buzzwords just to create hype – recruiters and admissions officers will see through that. Think more along the lines of what you hope to get out of your education and mention your future career goals.
  • Use the experience section to your advantage – Be sure to include languages you speak, volunteer work, certificates you’ve acquired, hobbies and skills, internships, and things like that.
