Family Collaboration Tips for College Planning 1

Planning for college does not rest solely on the shoulders of children or parents. While some tasks will be assigned to different members of the family, there are a number of aspects that call for collaboration. Here are a few examples:

  • Researching schools – While selecting schools to apply to falls to students, researching schools is an area where parents can help. Focus on things like tuition costs and available financial aid. The family can consider these factors along with things like the desired major of the student. This can help the college hopeful to make good decisions about which schools are the right fit.
  • College visits – While the student will be visiting the school, parents may help to plan the trip and may even be the ones who drive their teen to the school to check it out.
  • Testing – While the student has to take the test, parents may also be of support by helping your children to remember the dates for their ACT or SAT test, driving the student to the exam, or encouraging them to take a prep course if necessary.
  • Scholarships – Parents may have connections that make it easier for them to learn about scholarships that are available to their children. Remind your teen to apply before the deadline.
