Perhaps nothing intimidates students more during college application season than getting their essays started. Here are a few essential tips that can get you going in the right direction.
- Read the instructions carefully – One of the worst things to have to do is rewrite an essay because you realize you didn’t meet the requirements properly. Of course, it would be even worse to send in an essay that doesn’t follow the instructions and negatively impacts your entire application. Read carefully. Stick to the word count and the prompt.
- Gather your ideas – You can start with mental notes, but be sure to write them down before you forget. Remember, you’re not writing the essay yet. You are just putting down ideas related to the prompt. Think about what you are passionate about or life experiences that you’ve had that you can relate to the prompt in some way.
- Get started! – No one should be sending in their first draft anyway, so there is no pressure! Just get writing and put something down on paper so you can get onto the editing and revising phases. Getting the first draft out as soon as possible will give you the optimal amount of time to get it right before sending it in.
