Some college applications will want you to write an essay about why you chose this particular university. But you don’t want to make any of the usual mistakes associated with the “why us” essay. Here are a few of the most common errors so that you can avoid them.
- Error 1: Not being specific to the school – Some of the reasons you choose a college may have to do with the town and the ambiance, but those are not the things they want to hear about in a “why us” essay. You need to be specific about the school, its reputation, the program you are interested in, and what makes you a good fit for that particular program.
- Error 2: Making a mistake regarding the university – Now is not the time to misspell the name of a staff member or get the mascot confused with that of another university. Double-check to make sure your entire essay is accurate, especially anything that is specific about the university.
- Error 3: Making it all about you – Sure, you can spend the whole essay explaining why you are great, and they should want you at their university, but that’s not what they asked. Talk about the school first, and if you mention yourself, it should only be to show how your talents and passions fit in with the university’s culture.
