Many students dread when a college essay is based on the topic “why us.” But once you understand how to address the question, it will go from a dragon you have to slay to being the sort of essay topic you hope for because it’s one of the easier ones.

Here are a few tips to help get your “why us” college application essay off to a good start:

  • Research before you begin – The first step to writing a “why us” essay is understanding the college you are writing to. Remember, they want to know why they should choose you, not why you chose them. But when you match your goals and objectives to something specific in their school’s curriculum, it will show you did your homework and didn’t just choose their university for its reputation alone.
  • Make the connection – What is there about your skillset, experience, or future hopes that make you the perfect match for this school? These are the exact things you had to think about when putting the school on your college list, so now is the time to explain it to the admissions officer.
  • Be excited – If you don’t sound excited to attend their school, they won’t be excited to accept you. So be sure the words you use convey your enthusiasm since you have to do so on paper, and there is no opportunity to express excitement through tone of voice or gestures and facial expressions.
