Some schools require standardized test scores to appear on your application. Others don’t care at all. Some are in between. The important thing is to know what the universities you are applying to have decided since those policies will affect you directly.

Here are what the three testing policy options mean:

  • Test Blind – If a school is test blind, they don’t consider standardized tests in their criteria for admissions. The nice thing about applying to a test blind school is that there are plenty of good students who simply don’t score well on standardized tests.
  • Test Optional – This is the happy medium most schools have decided to settle into. It’s not required to include your score, but it will be considered if you do. Of course, if you don’t include it, it may still be considered in a way. The admissions officer may just assume it means you didn’t do well. The other problem with not including your scores when applying to a test optional school is that they may assume you didn’t take the test, and that could indicate a student who isn’t as driven or competitive.
  • Test – These schools require the scores, just as most schools did in pre-pandemic times. They may also have minimum scores required.
