Summer courses may seem like they are a long way off, but the time to find the right college summer courses and apply for them is now if you are a high school student looking for a way to give your student profile a boost. Here are a few quick dos and don’ts to help you choose a course.
- Do Look for Courses at a College You Hope to Attend – This will ensure any college credits will be accepted (you may still need to check if the credits will count toward your anticipated field of study), and it will ensure the college will care about the course.
- Don’t Assume You Have No Time in Your Schedule – Some summer courses are just a week, so you can still take that summer job, internship, or volunteer opportunity and get into a summer course. Of course, some courses may be longer, so you just need to plan your summer schedule well.
- Do Check to Make Sure the Credits Will Count – Not all summer courses even give you college credit, but if it does, you’ll want to check and see if the colleges you are applying to will accept the credits.
- Don’t Assume More Expensive Is Automatically Better – What’s more important is that the program is very selective and merit-based. Even a free course may have more value on a profile than an expensive course that lets anyone buy their way in.
