College Planning Reminders for High School Juniors and Seniorsm1

It is the start of a new calendar year, so here are a few essential reminders for high school juniors and seniors who are planning to attend college after graduation.

  • Juniors – It is time to get your college list narrowed down so you can prepare to apply. You want at least four schools on your list. There should always be a ‘reach’ school. This is your dream school, even if you are unlikely to get in. There should also be a couple of safety schools – sure things in case your other applications are not accepted. You also want one school in the middle. You would be happy to go and are pretty sure you can get in, but it’s not a sure thing. Feel free to double those numbers if you want to be extra cautious, but eight schools are the max you should be applying to.
  • Seniors – If you haven’t filled out the FAFSA yet, do it right away. We’re not even close to the federal deadline yet, but state and school deadlines are much earlier in the calendar year. Some could be any day now. Don’t forget to apply for merit-based scholarships as well.
