College Planning For Families 1

In some households, parents take the responsibility upon themselves to put their kids through college. Because of this, they want control of the planning process as well. In other families, youths plot their own education course 100% independent of their parents. However, at College Planning Source, we find that the best results come when families work together! Here are some tips for college planning as a family.

  • Research schools together – When selecting a school, think about things that will impact the future of your child and of the family. For example, how much does the school cost? Where is the school located (how far from the family)? Is the school the right fit for your student’s chosen major?
  • Plan the college visit – Of course, the student will be visiting the college alone, and that makes sense because you can’t bring mom and dad to school with you (and most young people wouldn’t want that anyway). However, you may need your parents to help you plan the trip. In fact, they may even be willing to drive you to the visit.
  • Financial planning – Parents shouldn’t be dipping into retirement to pay for college, but you also don’t want students to be saddled with debt for years to come. It takes good financial planning on the part of the family, especially if you are sending multiple kids off to college.
