You have to nail the essay on your college applications if you want to stand out among the piles of applications that come across an admissions officer’s desk. Of course, you may already be well aware of this, and the stress of that is making it even more difficult to know where to start. So, we wanted to share three essential tips that can point you in the right direction and help make the essay a much more enjoyable part of the process.
- Stand out by being different – That seems like a simple concept, but how can you do it? One way is to start with your own hot take on a subject. Another option is to let the admissions officer in on something about your personality that people think is strange. Or, you can tell a story where you are not the hero – just make sure you learn something from the way you mishandled things.
- Answer a question using your life – Don’t feel like you have to give the definitive answer – the solution could merely be your opinion based on something that you experienced in your life. Ask the question and then tell your story that answers it.
- Get personal – Remember that the admissions officer wants to learn something about you that proves you belong at that school. Don’t just repeat information they can learn from reading your profile.
