Even a student with the most balanced college list may have a specific school that they are really hoping to get accepted to. If that sounds like you, then you may want to take action to show them how much an acceptance letter to their school will mean to you. Choosing to apply either Early Action or Early Decision can do just that.

But before you decide, you need to know what the two terms mean:

  • Early Decision – If you are 100% certain you are going to go to a particular school if they accept you, then early decision may be the right option for you. By applying Early Decision, you are creating a binding agreement with the college that, if they choose to accept you, that is definitely the university you will attend. The advantage is that you will both show the school how serious you are about going to their university, and you will get an early reply. You still need to apply to other schools in case your Early Decision school doesn’t accept your application. Just remember that if the Early Decision school accepts your application, the replies you get from other schools won’t matter.
  • Early Action – Early Action has the benefits of applying early, getting an early answer, and showing a school you are serious about them, but the decision is not binding. You could actually still go to another school that accepts you. But don’t apply Early Action anywhere if you are applying Early Decision to another school.
