career-research-college-major

Education culture in the United States asks a lot of high school students. You are expected to be able to choose a topic to major in before you even graduate and head off to college. The idea behind your major is to get the education you need for a future career. So when it comes to choosing a major, sometimes the best way to do it is to figure out what you want to do for work and then work backward to see which major will help prepare you the best.

Here are a few tips to assist you while doing career research that may help you select the best college major for you:

  • Salary – After graduation, the goal is to start a career in your chosen field. Your pay will usually depend on the entry-level salary since you won’t have any experience yet. You can research entry-level salaries to determine if they will offer what you need for your daily living expenses, plus your student loan repayment schedule.
  • Supply and Demand – Maybe the career you are researching once had many job opportunities, but today, there are many more graduates than workers required. That would make for some tough competition right from day one. It’s better to look for careers with growing opportunities where the number of people interested in those careers doesn’t yet meet the demand.
  • Fulfillment – Interview people who work in that field to see if they enjoy their work and feel a sense of fulfillment. This can help determine if you will be satisfied with that career long-term.
