It’s the dreaded question you get asked from the time you are a little kid until you graduate high school: What do you want to be when you grow up? If you are one of the fortunate few who have always known what you want to do, congratulations! If not, this article will provide a few tips to help you get started with the career exploration process. Here are some questions to answer:

  • What matters most to you? – Think about what you like, your hobbies and your passions. Make a list of all the careers that you can think of that have anything to do with your interests.
  • What are you good at? – Do you have any particular skills and talents that are already marketable or that could be with a little honing? Make a list of all the careers that use those skills and talents and see if they match up with the things you love to do or are passionate about.
  • Can you make money doing any of those things? – Now it is time to compare all those careers on your list with the job market. If you can’t make a living wage or feel the career is overly saturated and competitive, it may not be the best way to spend your education money.

It’s not easy, but the goal is to try to find jobs that you will enjoy, be good at, and can make money doing.
