Each year, new college rankings are reported by various sources, and some students are tempted to just grab the top 10-15 on the list and call it a day when it comes to selecting where to apply. However, research has to go deeper than college ranking lists if you want to apply to the best schools for your personal education needs. Here are a few of the reasons you can’t go by ranking lists alone.

  • Each organization that puts out a college rankings list develops its own ranking system. If they don’t share what the rankings are based on, how can you know if the college scored well for the categories you are interested in?
  • Many schools cruise up the rankings each year based on things like overall track record, reputation, or the amenities they offer. It may have nothing to do with the quality of their programs, the number of students who can find entry-level jobs after graduation, or the price of tuition.
  • If the ranking organization is not transparent about criteria, you have to be concerned about financial influence.
  • Very few ranking systems factor in affordability at all, and this is one of the most important factors for families. So, it often skews the results.
