Getting into the right college summer program can be a great way to make your student profile stand out. But what if you can’t afford a pricey summer program and you didn’t get accepted to any of the free or affordable ones you applied for? Don’t panic! There are other ways to ensure your summer activities will help you work toward your educational goals. Here are a few alternatives:
- Volunteer Work – Volunteer work shows a community spirit and gives you the opportunity to help others. At the same time, you can try to connect your volunteer work to the major you hope to pursue. For example, if you hope to get into marketing, see if you can create an ad for a local charity’s upcoming fundraiser.
- An Internship – This is a great way to gain experience in the workplace in your chosen field, see if it’s a good fit for you, make real-world business connections, and maybe even make a little money (if it’s a paid internship).
- A Summer Job – Working during the summer shows that you can handle responsibility. It can also help you to put aside some money for your college experience. It may even help you pay for part of your tuition.
