There are so many tips available for writing college essays, and this is such a crucial part of the admissions process we’ve included the topic in our free webinar series. Even if you feel like you’ve already read every suggestion there is to read, we may have a few more you haven’t heard yet. Here are some advanced tips for college admissions essay writing.
- Determine your main point before you start writing – You have to get to the point quickly in an application essay, so before you even decide what story you are going to tell, you need to think about the point you want to make. This isn’t just an anecdote from your life.
- Answer the “W” questions – By the end of the essay, your reader should be able to answer who, what, when, and where your essay is about. But most importantly, the admissions officer should know why you wrote about this particular topic.
- Write it in one sitting, then come back a few days later – Of course, this means writing your essay well before it is due, which is probably a point you have heard over and over again anyway. Writing your essay as a stream of consciousness work gets your authentic voice on the paper. Revisiting it with fresh eyes a few days later allows you to revise things that made sense to you in the moment but that another reader may not understand.
