Before you start applying to schools, you may wonder how much education will be required to get an entry-level position in the field you are interested in. The fact is that the job market continues to grow more competitive as a greater degree of high school graduates pursue higher education. For example, over the past ten years, there has been a 7.5% increase in the number of people who opt for a bachelor’s degree or more.
Interestingly, during that same period, there was a 7% decrease in the number of jobs that require any sort of college degree. So, does a college education even make sense? Let’s let statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics tell the story:
- Bachelor’s degree (or less) – 95% of jobs
- Bachelor’s degree (minimum) – 18%
- Master’s degree or doctoral – 5%
So, career research is a must in order to know what category your career is going to fall into. Of course, earnings are also a matter to consider. Jobs that don’t require higher education usually come with a lower salary. A report published in Forbes magazine shows this to be the case:
- Bachelor’s degree: Median earnings of $59,600
- High school diploma: Median earnings of $36,600
