When applying to college, you want a balanced list of reach, safety, and likely schools. But you also want all of the schools to be a good fit for you. Here are some tips to help you create the best possible college list for your own educational goals.
- Start now – It’s never too soon to start building your college list. And even if you think you’re already a little late in the game, the best time to start is today!
- Keep an open mind – You may have some ideas based on things you’ve heard about schools from family, friends, and guidance counselors. But once you look into those schools, they may not be for you. Keep an open mind so that you don’t pass on the perfect school just because you didn’t think it was what you were looking for.
- Categorize the schools – Make sure you have an equal number of likely, reach, and safety schools.
- Visit the schools to see which ones are the best fit – Make sure you tour the department related to your major (or a few departments that interest you if you haven’t decided yet).
- Consider the cost – Factor in how expensive tuition is with the amount of support you anticipate receiving from grants, scholarships, and other sources.
