It is no secret that the major a person selects in college, and their first job after graduation is more likely to have little to do with each other than to match. The US Census Bureau releases information from time to time on the industry the graduates of certain majors end up in, and you will note that the discrepancies vary depending on the chosen field of study.
The fact is that if you select a major based on what you hope to do with the rest of your life, it doesn’t hurt to get your foot in the door early. Here are some reasons to look for a college internship.
- Experience – Manny jobs require both a degree and experience. Your college can only provide you with one of those. The internship will fill in the gap and help you to be able to apply for more jobs in your field of choice.
- Resume – If two graduates with similar CVs apply for a job, the one with experience is definitely going to have a leg up.
- Connections – Many students end up getting a job at the company they interned for. You may make connections with middle management while you are there that can lead to future work opportunities.
