According to a study by the US Department of Education, about 30% of college students change their major during the first three years of going to college. Such a change can be expensive and time-consuming, especially if many of your credits don’t transfer to your new major. That stat may add to the pressure you already feel about choosing a major. Here are a few tips to help you choose well the first time.
- Identify career paths you are passionate about.
- Know your own abilities and talents. You are more likely to stick with something you are good at.
- Consider whether the degree will help you find a good-paying job in a field that will still be around 10,20, or even 50 years from now.
- Consider schools with the best programs that meet your needs.
- Don’t rush your decision or let anyone pressure you into choosing before you are ready.
- Make a pros and cons list. Don’t be afraid to consider the disadvantages of a career path.
- Think of how likely you are to change your mind and whether this major offers you any flexibility.
- Talk it over with advisors, your parents, trusted peers, and others to get good advice.
