One of the things that students dread the most about the college applications process is having to write an essay. To help simplify the process just a little, we’ve come up with these three vital tips.
- Ignore the word “optional” when it appears in connection with an essay – If the college application says that an essay is optional and you actually leave it blank, it just says to the admissions officer that you are only willing to put forth the minimal effort. That’s not going to get you into your preferred schools.
- Think about the word count before you begin writing – If the word count is just 300, you can’t begin telling a long story that requires 650 words. Be sure you take word count into consideration when selecting your topic.
- Tell your story, not the story you think an admissions officer wants to hear – Admissions officers want to read something that no one else could have written except for you because it is your own personal story. Don’t “sell out” and just try to write something that the admissions officer will want to read. Be true to yourself and tell your story in your own personal voice.
