College Planning Tips for Freshman 1

For parents, college planning can begin when a child is very young. Students may be encouraged to start thinking about continuing their education after high school before freshman year even beings. Is there anything you can do as a freshman to improve your college experience? Here are a few quick tips.

  • Think about AP classes – You schedule in high school can allow you to take some advanced placement courses. This will give you a head start since passing the AP exams will give you some college credits to start out. There is currently a total of 36 different AP exams you can take.
  • Work with your school counselor – Schedule a meeting yourself rather than waiting for one. Your counselor will appreciate not having to hunt you down and will see that you are serious about reaching your goals. This can result in some extra support when you need it.
  • Increase your extracurriculars – Focus on volunteering and getting involved with the community. You can also try out for sports teams, drama clubs, and other things you are interested in pursuing.
  • Start saving your money – From your first job, start saving. You’ll appreciate it when you can afford things like books and lunches without having to increase the amount of your student loans.
  • Look into summer activities – This can include extracurriculars, college courses for high school students, and summer jobs.
