Each college in the US is facing a difficult decision with the effects of the global pandemic beginning to affect plans for the Fall semester. Here are a few of the options that schools are looking into and the reasons why.
- Online education – This is obviously the safest option if the pandemic is still going on in the Fall. However, it comes with a host of its own issues. Plus, some students who are paying in-person prices for online education may not be happy about it. The shift, therefore, may be to have some classes online instead of all of them.
- Shorter semester – One major concern is the resurgence of COVID-19 during the flu season. Therefore, some schools are hoping to reopen, perhaps even a week or two early. Then they intend to cut vacation days (like fall break) to have the semester done in November. This would allow students to return home in November.
- The “business as usual” approach – Some schools are determined to open up as usual in the Fall, assuming the state they are located in allows it. This will place the burden on students to make a decision as to whether they want to risk being in that kind of environment.
