Students are placed under so much pressure to perform academically that mental health has become a growing concern. Are you headed for student burnout? Here are eight warning signs that you may need to seek assistance:

  1. New or increased anxiety or depression – Obviously, all depression or anxiety are not related to burnout, but if the onset is sudden or the condition has gotten worse without any other cause, then it may be the stress of student life taking its toll.
  2. Always tired (without discernable cause) – Again, if you just aren’t sleeping, then your tiredness is likely related to that. But, unexplained exhaustion could be a symptom of burnout.
  3. Increased or new irritability – Do you find yourself snapping over things that you would have handled calmly in the past?
  4. Lack of creative flow – Is it becoming more difficult to be creative when it comes to your hobbies?
  5. New or increased procrastination – Do you suddenly leave everything until the last minute (or even more for the last minute than before)?
  6. Increased or new dread over deadlines – Do deadlines suddenly seem like giants to be slain?
  7. Reduced academic confidence – Do you find that you used to be confident on the day of a test, but now you are second-guessing yourself, even though your academic performance has continued at the same level?
  8. Increased cases of sickness – Burnout can impact your body’s ability to fight off illness due to being in a constant state of fight or flight.
