You’re going to be writing a bunch of essays for your college applications, and it’s a part of the process that causes the most anxiety for students. Here are a few things you should do before you write your essays that will make the process easier.
- Read the prompt carefully – What is the college asking you to write? What is the word count?
- Brainstorm – Think about topics you can write about. Do you have an experience, a passion, or a particular value that lends itself to this topic? Will you be able to say something of value without going over the word count?
- Brainstorm on paper – Take your ideas and jot down some notes (or type them up). See which topics are the easiest to write about. Were any (dare we say it) enjoyable to write? Which topics make you feel like your words sound the most like you, rather than coming out like a canned idea that will be just like all the other essays the admissions officer sees?
- Choose your topic and write a draft – It’s okay if it’s bad. Just write a full essay using the subject matter you chose to see if you can get your ideas on paper and fit them within the word limit.
