Because university usually comes before joining the workforce in the “adulting” order of operations, students often think in the direction of choosing a college major and then choosing a career. However, there are some vital reasons to think about your career first and then what courses you want to take in school.
Here are four reasons to think about your career before choosing your college major:
- You’ll have to pay back those loans somehow – Without the right career in mind, you may be looking at an entry-level salary that doesn’t meet your daily needs while allowing you to pay back your student loans. Think of college as an investment and your career as the returns – which is more important?
- It can impact your college choice – When you are thinking about a career and not just a major, you will look beyond the school with the best program and also look for schools with the best job placement statistics.
- The number of credits may vary – Different careers will require different programs, and some may even favor on-the-job experience over a particular degree.
- You want to be able to start working right after college – If there are no jobs available in a particular field, all the education in the world won’t help you find work, so you need to research job opportunities.
