If you want your college applications to stand out, writing superior essays is a must. But if you are already intimidated by this part of the application process, how can you set yourself on the path to success? Here are three tips to get your creative juices flowing.
- Make the essay personal – This should probably go without saying, but the whole point of the essay is for the admissions officer to learn about you. So be sure that the very first sentence gives the reader the feeling that you are about to let them in. Then back it up with a precise and intriguing story. This isn’t the time to just regurgitate your student profile (I’m good at sports, I like math, etc.).
- Use something that makes you stand out – Start with an unpopular opinion that you hold or admit to something about your life or personality that others may consider odd. Maybe even tell a story that you’re not proud of but that you learned from.
- Raise a question that you can answer with personal experience – Even if the answer is just your opinion and not a statement of fact, this type of essay can tell your perspective and gives the admissions officer a unique glimpse into how you think.
