A student can enter an early decision agreement with just one of the colleges they apply to. This will allow the student to apply early and to receive a quick decision. However, the agreement locks you into attending that school if they accept your application. For this reason, you need to think long and hard about whether this is your number one choice before selecting an early decision school. Here are a few questions that can help.
- Have you researched the school thoroughly? – Once your early decision application is accepted, it’s too late to say, “But I didn’t know….” This is a binding agreement, so do your research online and be sure to visit and tour the school.
- How is the curriculum of the school in your chosen major – You want to be sure that the school can provide you with the best education in the field that you want to enter into. Reputation alone should not determine which school you enter into an early decision agreement with.
- Do you really know what you want? – Sometimes, students change their decision about which school they want to attend during their senior year as they do more research and even learn more about their own likes and dislikes. If you are worried that your preferences change often, you may want to consider Early Action instead of Early Decision. You can still apply early and get a quick reply from just one school, but you won’t be locked in.
